Frequently Asked Questions

We get it. Your elopement is one of the biggest decisions of your life, so of course you're allowed to have questions! There are no silly ones here, and please feel free to contact us if you're not sure about anything. Here are some of the more common questions people ask:

What is included in every Elope West Coast NZ package?

Every package includes a legal ceremony led by registered celebrant Gen Chan, professional photography by Shirley Șerban, witnesses if needed, and the use of bouquets, buttonholes, music and New Zealand-themed décor. Selected packages also include extended photography, celebratory drinks, a platter meal and beachfront accommodation at View With A Room NZ.

How much does a New Zealand elopement package cost?

Our West Coast elopement packages range from NZ$1,650 to NZ$3,250. Pītau costs NZ$1,650, Paewai NZ$2,450, Rātā NZ$2,850 with one night’s accommodation, and Taharangi NZ$3,250 with two nights’ accommodation. All packages include a legal ceremony and professional photography.

Where are Elope West Coast NZ ceremonies held?

Most of our elopements are held at Motukiekie Beach on New Zealand’s West Coast, between Greymouth and Punakaiki. Couples choosing an accommodation package may instead marry at the private sea-view venue at View With A Room NZ. We can also arrange ceremonies at a nearby forested river location or discuss another West Coast location you have in mind.

How do we check availability and book an elopement?

Contact us through the website form, email elopewestcoastnz@gmail.com, or phone or WhatsApp +64 21 132 2452. Tell us your preferred date, package and any special requests. Gen or Shirley will confirm availability and explain the next steps for securing your booking.

Can overseas couples legally marry in New Zealand?

Yes. You do not need to be a New Zealand citizen or resident to marry or have a civil union here. We can plan your elopement by email or video call before you arrive, then guide you through applying for your New Zealand marriage licence and completing the required documentation.

What do we need to organise before our New Zealand elopement?

You will need to apply online for a New Zealand marriage or civil union licence more than three working days before your ceremony. The licence remains valid for three months.

Gen will talk with you about your vows and the ceremony, while Shirley will find out your photo preferences. We set up the space, make everything beautiful, give you a choice of flowers to use, and make sure everything happens smoothly. Your only job then is to turn up and have a wonderful elopement together!

Can we invite guests to our elopement?

Yes. The ceremony venue at View With A Room NZ can provide seating for up to six guests. Beach and other outdoor ceremonies are generally standing, and smaller groups work best because of the sound of the sea. If you prefer to elope without guests, we can provide the required witnesses.

What happens if it rains on our elopement day?

West Coast weather can change quickly, so we remain flexible with the timing and use suitable breaks in the weather whenever possible. Overcast skies can also create dramatic photographs. Umbrellas are available, and couples with an accommodation package may use the indoor sea-view ceremony option at View With A Room NZ if the weather is severe.

What is the best time of day for a West Coast elopement?

Early morning and late afternoon usually provide the most flattering light for photographs, while an evening ceremony may include a West Coast sunset. The best time also depends on the tide, weather and season. We will recommend suitable ceremony times based on the conditions and the atmosphere you want.

How many photographs will we receive?

The Pītau package includes more than 100 edited photographs of your ceremony, couple portraits and any guests. Packages with extended photography generally include more. You will receive all successful images, with unsuitable or duplicate shots removed, in separate high-resolution printing and smaller online-sharing folders on a keepsake USB.

Can we customise an elopement package?

Yes. We can combine selected elements from different packages or discuss other arrangements to suit your ceremony, photography, accommodation and celebration preferences. Contact us with what you have in mind, and we can prepare a personalised option and price.

Can we choose a different ceremony location?

Yes. Although most packages are based at Motukiekie Beach or View With A Room NZ, we can arrange an elopement elsewhere on the West Coast. Additional travel, planning or permit costs may apply, particularly for ceremonies on Department of Conservation land.

Do you welcome LGBTQ+ couples and non-traditional ceremonies?

Absolutely. We welcome couples of every gender, sexual orientation, religion and background. Your ceremony can be traditional, informal, spiritual, secular or completely personal to you. We will work with you to create an elopement that reflects your relationship and preferences.

Can you help arrange hair, makeup or a celebration dinner?

Yes. We can recommend trusted local providers or arrange additional services for you for an extra fee. Our Rātā and Taharangi packages include a meal-sized celebration platter, and we can also recommend nearby restaurants if you would prefer a dinner after your ceremony.

Is accommodation available for our elopement guests?

View With A Room NZ accommodates only the couple, but several other accommodation providers are available nearby, including options within walking distance. We can share local recommendations if your guests would like to stay close to the ceremony location.

Can we book Gen or Shirley for a wedding, civil union or vow renewal?

Yes. Gen and Shirley are available together or separately for weddings, civil unions and vow renewals, even if you are not booking an Elope West Coast NZ package. Contact us to discuss the ceremony, photography, location and services you need.
